Introduction to Defensive Technologies

In this section, we will take a high level look at some of the most common defensive cybersecurity technologies available for small businesses.

More specifically, we’ll be looking at:

• Firewalls
• AV – Antivirus
• EDR – Endpoint Detection and Response
• MDR – Managed Detection and Response

If this seems overwhelming, don’t panic! We’ll break everything down in a format that’s easy to understand.

These are industry standard technologies that either comprise or provide an important component of the primary defense of every company, from the smallest to the largest companies in the world.

By understanding how each of these technologies work, you’ll be better equipped to understand how and when to deploy them in your own organization. We’ll work on this specifically at the end of this course during the ‘Creating A Plan’ section.

Additionally, we will also build upon this section throughout the course in order to look at more advanced approaches to cybersecurity – including how a SOC works as well as active defenses using tactics like honeypots.
